The Southern Costa Brava - Fournells to Calonge
Fornells Beach, Costa Brava, Spain FornellsLeaving Begur by the Palafrugell road via Esclanya, one reaches the turn-off for Fornells, a picturesque village surrounded by a beautiful landscape – an inspiration for Francisco Gimeno in many of his paintings. It has a lovely beach and premiere hotels. AiguablavaAlmost bordering onto Fornells is Aiguablava, with a highly sheltered and somewhat deep cove there sits a beach of remarkable beauty. Highly recommended is the National Parador, called the Parador of the Costa Brava, which has a sunny south facing bar built onto the dramatic cliffs. From here the two coves, that of Fornells and Aiguablava can be seen. TamariuA picturesque marine quarter of Palafrugell, whose poetic names comes the tamarinds that flank the ravines that empty into the beach. The village rests before the sea and is surrounded by pine trees on land. The houses are harmoniously integrated into the countryside and the setting proves to be quite lovely. LlafrancNestled between the cape of Sant Sebastian, where a lighthouse can be seen, and the promontory of “En Blanc”, Llafranc is parallel to the sea and sits alongside its charming beach. The countryside around it is adorned with numerous pine groves. Llafranc, built upon a Roman village, has become a bustling tourist resort, with modern buildings built along the Paseo de La Marineda. Calella De Palafrugell (Calella)Once the ancient quarter of Palafrugell but today a town of massive tourist activity not recommended for the faint hearted! However, the coast adjacent to Calella affords an original outline in which numerous and sheltered coves are embedded such as Can Palau, El Port de la Mala Espina and El Port Bo, as well as beaches such as Castell, d’en Calau and Canadell. Despite the immense influx of tourists, Calella still preserves its typical urban profile of the fishing village to which it owed its origin but the considerable growth of the locality has overridden the coves and other adjacent areas, which has become quarters of Calella, such as Port Pelegri, La Barandill, Els Canyers and El Golft. PalamosA historical town from whose port the Catalan squadron that conquered Sicily at the end of the 13 th century departed. At present Palamos is one of the most important fishing ports in Catalonia. The fish market in the public exchange (Longja) is an interesting event every afternoon. The magnificent beach of La Forsca is one of the busiest on the Costa Brava. Strolling through the street of Palamos, with its numerous boutiques, well-stocked grocery shops and bars and restaurants is a real pleasure. Sant Antoni De CalongeThe fishing centre of Calonge, which has experienced a huge upsurge in tourism and, consequently, has undergone incredible expansion. At one end of the sandy beaches, the Medieval silhouette of Torra Valentina, a large fortified tower that formed part of the defensive system of Palamos, comes into view. From the mountain massif, which begins to the rear of Torra Valentina and which stands out at the outcrop of the Roques Palnes, one can sea magnificent views of the bay. |
